The Newsroom: A Comedy Series Exploring the Dynamics of a Canadian TV Newsroom
The Newsroom is a television comedy series that delves into the goings-on at a Canadian television newsroom. Interestingly, the show bears similarities to the acclaimed series The Office, as it adopts a mockumentary-style approach, providing a glimpse into the lives and quirks of the newsroom staff.
Unlike their British counterparts in The Office, the characters in The Newsroom may be better educated, but they can be equally petty and immature, especially the self-obsessed, buck-passing, and penny-pinching news director, George Findlay (Ken Finkleman). The series follows Findlay's journey over the course of eight years, from the first season to the second.
As the second season begins, Findlay's personal life has taken a tumultuous turn – his wife and mistress have both left him, and he's seeking therapy and taking anti-depressants. To make matters worse, the airhead anchor, Jim Walcott (Peter Keleghan), has decided to make the move to American television, leaving Findlay with the task of finding a replacement.
The candidate Findlay has in mind is not only attractive but also highly qualified, and the prospect of asking her out poses an ethical dilemma for the news director. Meanwhile, Walcott's transition to the American market proves to be a challenge, and before long, he finds himself back on a flight to Canada.
Despite these experiences, Findlay has not grown or changed much, apart from his advancing age. Instead, he finds himself grappling with the terminal illnesses of an old friend, an employee, and an employee's pet, in the remaining 12 episodes of the season.
The Newsroom features a host of guest stars, including Naomi Klein, the author of No Logo, and Alberta Watson from the hit series 24. The second season follows the work of writer/director/producer Ken Finkleman, who previously created the series Foreign Objects and the TV movie Escape From the Newsroom. The show was renewed for a third and final season, providing a fitting conclusion to this comedy series that delves into the dynamics of a Canadian television newsroom.
